Campaign Newsroom

Sacramento, Calif. – Almost three weeks after the June 5 election, the Yes on 29 campaign today conceded a narrow defeat on Proposition 29, the tobacco tax initiative that would have raised money for cancer research while lowering smoking rates throughout California.

With estimates that more than one million vote-by-mail and provisional ballots remain uncounted, and only 65,000 votes separating the yes and no side, sponsors and supporters of Prop 29 are not conceding defeat.

How often are voters given the chance to cast a vote that will save lives? Today, the people of California have an opportunity to do just that -- and to save the financially struggling state billions of dollars in long-term health care costs.
